Villa Ema is listed under the following categories:
The villa is approached through automatic gates that lead to a shaded parking pergola. On entering you'll immediately notice the living room, a striking space focused on a large suspended chimney-breast surrounded by a sunken seating area. On this floor you'll also find an indoor dining room which may well often be overlooked in favour of the outdoor shaded and furnished pergola with a table for alfresco meals, and a barbecue.
The kitchen is beyond the dining-room and, like the living room, is strikingly modern with sleek surfaces and contemporary equipment. The owners are keen cooks and this is their personal home, so the kitchen has plenty of appliances, anything you might need for cooking delicious Tuscan family meals.
There is also a bedroom with three beds and ensuite bathroom on the ground floor. It can be set up as a double and a single, or as three singles. This room has an independent entrance and is ideal for somebody with limited mobility as they can avoid using the stairs.
Upstairs you'll find 3 more bedrooms, all ensuite and one with an extra single bed, useful for families with younger children who are happier still sleeping in with their parents. There are four private bedrooms overall so, though the house sleeps 10, two will be sharing in a double or a twin.
Downstairs there is a cavernous underground space with a billiard tables and more.
Villa Ema is on the edge of a tiny village so it has no gravel road at all, unlike many of our other Tuscan rental homes.
The restaurant is a short distance from the villa, slightly lower off the ridge. It's a very short walk, only 5 to 10 minutes.
Villa Ema is on a ridge of the Vallombrosa, south of Florence and just below a curvy and panoramic road called "Setteponti", the road of seven bridges and close to the striking natural formations called "Le Balze", cliffs of red and naturally eroded sandstone that are said to be the landscape Leonardo da Vinci painted behind his famous portrait of Mona Lisa, La Gioconda. There are wonderful walks to be had directly from the house into this landscape, or, if you'd prefer to find a restaurant or cafe at the end of your walk, head south on the strada dei Setteponti to Loro Ciuffenna, a most beautiful medieval village along the way. Visiting the ancient mill perched along the gorge bisecting the village and the 1,000-year-old bridge that spans it, or stopping in one of the restaurants tucked away in its narrow meandering streets all brings the past pleasantly forward.
For the shopping enthusiasts there is a collection of outlet malls just 30 minutes drive away, with outlets for D&G, Nike, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Zegna and many others,
If you'd prefer big city sightseeing, both Arezzo and Florence are easily reached from Villa Ema. One could attend a Saracen Joust, sift through Antiquarian markets, or make a pilgrimage to the Renaissance gems like Piero della Francesca's "Pregnant Madonna" that fill the guidebooks.
This area is also known for its food and wine, and there will be other pilgrimages to make, to that local winery or unassuming trattoria whose visit will also become a favourite holiday memory.
