Nice little touches

  • A small restaurant is a very short walk away, perfect for ensuring the holiday is relaxing for everybody.

Good to know

  • While Loro Ciuffenna is close by, part of the walk is on the main road. The restaurant is much closer, so the walk is not a problem
  • There are four private bedrooms overall so, though the house sleeps 10, two will be sharing in a double or a twin.

Villa Ema is a modern house with a private pool in the Tuscan landscape south of Florence. Built on the edge of a ridge, access to the gated grounds reveals a private garden with wonderful views, a kidney shaped pool surrounded by laurel hedges and a modern house with a striking living room, spacious ensuite bedrooms and a sleek and well-equipped kitchen.

In the heart of Tuscany, just a short drive from the cultural gems of Arezzo and Florence, Villa Ema offers a blend of contemporary design and beautiful views. Set within gated grounds, the property ensures privacy and tranquility, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking luxury and relaxation.

The villa has four spacious ensuite bedrooms, each with large windows that frame views of the rolling Tuscan hills. The open-concept living and dining areas are bathed in natural light, featuring minimalist decor, high ceilings, and polished finishes that harmonize elegance and comfort.

A fully equipped kitchen is the perfect spot for trying Tuscan cuisine, or for a private chef to prepare a family dinner or a lavish soirée.

Outside a sparkling private pool is surrounded by a furnished outdoor area, perfect for lounging with a glass of Chianti in hand. Shaded pergolas and outdoor dining spaces invite you to enjoy al fresco meals while taking in the serene surroundings.

Conveniently located, this villa offers easy access to Tuscany's rich cultural, culinary, and natural attractions, providing the perfect home base for unforgettable adventures. Whether you’re exploring nearby vineyards, wandering through historic towns, or simply unwinding in luxurious seclusion, this property promises a great Tuscan experience.

Accommodation

The villa is approached through automatic gates that lead to a shaded parking pergola. On entering you'll immediately notice the living room, a striking space focused on a large suspended chimney-breast surrounded by a sunken seating area. On this floor you'll also find an indoor dining room which may well often be overlooked in favour of the outdoor shaded and furnished pergola with a table for alfresco meals, and a barbecue.

The kitchen is beyond the dining-room and, like the living room, is strikingly modern with sleek surfaces and contemporary equipment. The owners are keen cooks and this is their personal home, so the kitchen has plenty of appliances, anything you might need for cooking delicious Tuscan family meals.

There is also a bedroom with three beds and ensuite bathroom on the ground floor. It can be set up as a double and a single, or as three singles. This room has an independent entrance and is ideal for somebody with limited mobility as they can avoid using the stairs.

Upstairs you'll find 3 more bedrooms, all ensuite and one with an extra single bed, useful for families with younger children who are happier still sleeping in with their parents. There are four private bedrooms overall so, though the house sleeps 10, two will be sharing in a double or a twin.

Downstairs there is a cavernous underground space with a billiard tables and more.

“ My inspection visit ”

I visited this house on a rainy day in October 2024. I found it striking, reminiscent of 1960s films. For some reason I kept thinking of "The Pool", a 1968 Blake Edwards film with Peter Sellers and Claudine Longet. Or of "Fumo di Londra", a 1966 film with Alberto Sordi. The fireplace and sunken seating area are fabulous - I could just see myself lounging there with a cocktail, listening to songs from Andy Williams' collection of "Music to Watch Girls By". Downstairs, the enormous games room continues the 60s vibe, while outside a kidney-shaped pool completes it. This is not a typical Tuscan converted farmhouse, but a delightful, vibrant and exciting slice of Italian sixties culture.

FAQ about Villa Ema

1. What's the approach road like?

Villa Ema is on the edge of a tiny village so it has no gravel road at all, unlike many of our other Tuscan rental homes.

2. How far is the restaurant?

The restaurant is a short distance from the villa, slightly lower off the ridge. It's a very short walk, only 5 to 10 minutes.

Around Villa Ema

Villa Ema is on a ridge of the Vallombrosa, south of Florence and just below a curvy and panoramic road called "Setteponti", the road of seven bridges and close to the striking natural formations called "Le Balze", cliffs of red and naturally eroded sandstone that are said to be the landscape Leonardo da Vinci painted behind his famous portrait of Mona Lisa, La Gioconda. There are wonderful walks to be had directly from the house into this landscape, or, if you'd prefer to find a restaurant or cafe at the end of your walk, head south on the strada dei Setteponti to Loro Ciuffenna, a most beautiful medieval village along the way. Visiting the ancient mill perched along the gorge bisecting the village and the 1,000-year-old bridge that spans it, or stopping in one of the restaurants tucked away in its narrow meandering streets all brings the past pleasantly forward.

For the shopping enthusiasts there is a collection of outlet malls just 30 minutes drive away, with outlets for D&G, Nike, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Zegna and many others,

If you'd prefer big city sightseeing, both Arezzo and Florence are easily reached from Villa Ema. One could attend a Saracen Joust, sift through Antiquarian markets, or make a pilgrimage to the Renaissance gems like Piero della Francesca's "Pregnant Madonna" that fill the guidebooks.

This area is also known for its food and wine, and there will be other pilgrimages to make, to that local winery or unassuming trattoria whose visit will also become a favourite holiday memory.
