Villa Donati is a distinguished villa forming part of the extensive Montestigliano estate of 3.000 acres just south west of Siena. Situated in exceptionally picturesque countryside, Montestigliano has all the characteristics of the classic Tuscan Great Estate: avenues of cypresses, vineyards, olive groves, woodlands and neat, cultivated fields. Other farmhouses on the estate have been converted for holiday use. The villa has large, nobly proportioned rooms with high, beamed, decorated ceilings and antique furniture.
Entrance is into the large dining hall with a round table and interesting eighteenth century paintings. Three tall arches at the far end lead to a large shower-room with a washing machine.
Leading off the hall is a twin bedroom that accesses a single bedroom, a kitchen with a huge fireplace and ancient Siena marble sink, a small breakfast room, an elegant sitting room and a second single bedroom. Another door leads to the larder and wine cellar. A wide travertine staircase leads to the mezzanine floor with a small twin bedroom and a shower room.
On the first floor: a shower room and a corridor leading into a tall, elegantly furnished drawing room with a decorated ceiling and working fireplace. Off this room are a twin bedroom and three double bedrooms, two of which can be made up as a twin. Up a few more steps of the main staircase are a bathroom and an extra room with WC and washbasin.
The rear door of the villa from the reception hall, leads to a secluded garden with wonderful views.
There are two large swimming pools shared by guests at the main villa and the farmhouses. Both have ample sun furniture and extensive views across the countryside as far as Siena. The pool nearest the villa is reserved for people who want peace and quiet.
The estate buildings form a small complex with some farmhouses and agricultural buildings in a beautiful position on top of a hill, with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Wide, sandy floored cypress lined avenues traverse the forested hills of the estate, often terminating in belvederes at the most impressive viewpoints.
Although many of the stone benches which once flanked the avenues have gone, enough still remain to provide resting places on your walks down these romantic remnants of a more leisured era. Through the tangled woodlands, across the cultivated plain below, one can see Siena and the Chianti hills in the distance, and there is a rare abundance of wild flowers and animals. Wine, olive oil and other farm produce is for sale and guests are very welcome to watch or join in with agricultural activities.
