Montestigliano is a historic Tuscan estate west of Siena, on top of a hill with fabulous views. Some of the farmhouses and agricultural buildings on the vast estate have been carefully converted into comfortable houses and apartments. Guests on the estate share two swimming pools, one reserved for those who want peace and quiet, the other, further from the houses, for allowing free rein to summer holiday fun.
The hamlet is reached by winding up the hill on an ancient "strada bianca", a gravel road. The two Ropoli buildings are halfway up the hill. Stopping midway up the hill has some advantages and Ropoli Sotto enjoys them all.
It has sweeping uninterrupted views of the valley and the hills that surround it, is has greater quiet than that found in the Estate's central piazza, and it has an olive grove in its back garden and a pizza oven at hand.
Just the right size for a family, who will be delighted to know that the Family Pool is just a short walk up the drive.
Ropoli Sotto is listed under the following categories:
On the opposite side of the road from Casa Damiano this spacious apartment is on two floors of Casa Ropoli, a house built into the hillside along the drive up to Montestigliano.
A door leads directly into a roomy living-dining room with a dining table for six, and a remarkable Etruscan cellar, a small cool cave carved out of the local Tufa rock.
A stairway from the living room leads up first to an eat-in kitchen and then further to the sleeping accommodations on the top floor.
There are two twin bedroom and a double bedroom and the choice of a bathroom and a shower room. A back door from the kitchen leads to a semi-covered, paved patio with a pizza oven and private garden. This house may use the covered parking area below Casa Damiano across the drive.
Guests at all the properties may wander at will all over the estate. Part of the lands front the River Merse, which has excellent swimming and is protected for bathers by the Sienese authorities. The tiny village of Torri, with its famous monastery and striped cloisters is two minutes away by car, while there are pizzerie and restaurants within a few minutes' drive. A very important extra here is provided by the charming owners who will unobtrusively keep out of your way or happily go out of their way to help you, providing endless extra services if you require them.
During the summer concerts and exhibitions are often organised in the ancient granary, an extraordinary lofty space (14 X 28 m.) spanned by great arches laced with tie bars. This barn is also very suitable as studio space for art courses or conferences, and the rooms below, next to the estate offices, include a games room with billiards, TV, ping pong, a dining room, a catering kitchen and a small gift shop. The little restaurant provides delightful suppers twice a week.
