On a vine-covered hill in Chianti there is a small and ancient winery with several houses available for rent.
Trebbiano is the smallest, a cottage for two with a view of the pool and of the Chianti hills - the perfect spot for a Tuscan getaway.
The estate makes excellent wines, from Chianti Classico to some delicious Super Tuscans, while the large pool, about 50 metres beyond the houses, has a wide, furnished surround and beautiful views of the Chianti countryside, framed with flowers, herbs and shrubs attracting a myriad of butterflies.
Entrance to this intimate apartment is from its private garden and covered furnished patio into a sitting room furnished with a comfortable sofa and wicker armchairs. Off the sitting room is a compact kitchen that also accesses the patio, as well as a short hallway leading to the shower room.
A short open staircase leads up to the large bedroom with with a queen bed and a single. This room has a wide arched French doors to the central piazza.
The owners at the villa have their own, private parts of the grounds and parklands, and may occasionally use the pool. Guests have their own parking space and entrance, separate from the owners' villa. While you enjoy your holiday, 100 meters away exquisite wines are slowly moving and maturing in oak casks in the ancient cellars below the villa, lovingly tended just as they have been for centuries past. A visit to the cellars is a wonderful way of cooling off, for the natural temperature there varies between 12 degrees in winter and 18 degrees in the high summer, all brought about by the construction of the ancient cellars themselves. Touring from Lornano is a constant delight along picturesque roads. These three houses are sufficiently private for separate renting, while if taken by a group, there is plenty of space for everyone to meet together.
A few kilometers south is the beautiful medieval city of Siena. Known in present times for its Palio horse race and its wonderful shell-shaped piazza Il Campo, Siena was once a strong rival to Florence and a stopover must on the Via Francigena trail for pilgrims heading to Rome. That it fell to its adversary and lived in obscurity for centuries is now only a benefit, for its winding streets and striking architecture have survived the ages to delight the modern traveller. Whether you spend hours exploring the city centre, follow the Chiantigiana out to the wine hills, or simply linger by the pool, this corner of Tuscany is guaranteed to please.
