Travelling to Florence

Florence can be reached by Plane, Bus, Train and by car. Florence's city centre is largely pedestrianised, so it’s a great city to visit with public transport. It also has some good parking spots on the outskirts of the city from which you can walk or bus in. Here’s our advice for getting to Florence, with travel times from the main airports.

Closest Airports to Florence

Florence has its own airport, commonly called "Peretola", but it can also be reached easily from Pisa, Perugia, Bologna, Milan, Rome and Genoa, in that order. Pisa airport is the most popular for flights within Europe, while Rome, Milan or Bologna are the most likely airports of arrival for US and Canadian visitors.

How to get into Florence centre from Florence Airport

If you land in Florence Airport, the "Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci" the easiest way to get into the city centre is on the Airport Shuttle Bus - VolainBus. It leaves every 30 minutes and the travel time is approximately 20 minutes. It will drop you at the bus station which is very close to the main train station, and close to Florence city centre.

There is also now a new tram route, the T2, which runs between Florence Peretola airport and Santa Maria Novella train station. Trams run from the airport between 5am and midnight (Sunday-Thursday) and until 1.30am Friday and Saturday, departing every 6-7 minutes at peak times with a journey time of around 20 minutes.

You can also get a Taxi from the Airport in Florence City Center. The Taxi rank is to the right when you exit the airport and the cost is on a fixed rate. The cost for a taxi from the Airport to Florence city centre in 2020 is 22 Euro, rising to 24 Euro on weekends and holidays, and to 25.30 Euro at night. There is also a "Luggage Supplement" of 1 Euro per piece. If there are no Taxis at the rank the number to call is:

There is no Uber in Florence in 2020. It was banned in Italy in 2019 and is currently functioning only in Rome and Milan. Taxis are transparently priced and reliable so it's not a problem - I'd always rather give my money to a local professional driver rather than have a portion of it transferred to a corporation who will never put it back into the local economy.

Getting to Florence from Pisa Airport

The train may be the best way to get from Pisa Airport to Florence. From Pisa airport you can first get the PisaMover to the main central station. Turn left when you exit arrivals and the PisaMover is at the end of the airport. It will take 5 minutes to get to the central station – from here you can get a train to Florence. The trip will take around 1 hour. The train arrives at Florence Santa Maria Novella, the main station which is very central and close to the Duomo, the Uffizi, etc.

Attention (For those going back to the Airport from Pisa Centrale Station) You can't buy tickets for the Pisa Mover in the main railway station - you have to walk down to the Pisa Mover itself where there are separate train ticket machines.

Getting to Florence from Perugia Airport

Perugia is a small airport and the flights are seasonal and intermittent. Should you fly in to Perugia you can get a bus to Perugia Station - from there a train will take 2hrs and 15 mins.

Getting to Florence from Bologna Airport

Bologna Airport is a popular arrival hub. To get from Bologna Airport to Florence by train you will first need to get to Bologna Central Station. As in Florence, there is a shuttle bus, called Navetta BLQ Aerobus. It leaves every 11 minutes and costs 6 Euro.

You can buy tickets for the Bologna Airport Shuttle before you arrive - we haven't tested this but it might help the desperate search for coins on arrival.

A MonoRail Shuttle is being built but is not running (as at March 2020). We'll update this when it is open for business.

From Bologna Railway Station there are regular direct trains to Florence. The direct FrecciaRossa service takes 40 minutes and costs 17,90 Euro. You can buy tickets and see timetables on Trenitalia.

Rome has two airports, listed above. To get to Florence by train from either of them you will have to reach Roma Termini

From Fiumicino airport there is a half hour train ride into Rome’s central train station, Roma Termini. From Ciampino airport you can take a bus then a train – you’re always aiming for Roma Termini.

From Rome Central Station the fast train will get you to Florence in an hour and 36 minutes, at a cost of about 30 Euro. You can buy tickets and see timetables on Trenitalia.

Getting to Florence from Milan

Milan has 3 airports, Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo. Of the three, Linate is significantly closer to the city, and served by city public transport. Malpensa and Bergamo both require longer transfers, but they are not expensive. Bergamo only handles budget airlines, whereas the other two have a range of airlines.

The fast train (FrecciaRossa) from Milano Centrale to Florence takes under 2 hours and costs around 35 Euro. You can buy tickets and see timetables on Trenitalia.

All three airports have Shuttle buses to get you into Milan Central - the one from Linate takes 30 minutes, from Malpensa around an hour and from Bergamo 1hr 30 mins.
