Villa San Martino is a wonderful villa surrounded by terraced gardens set up to take advantage of the fabulous views it enjoys to the west, toward the hills of Chianti and looking toward San Gimignano with its famous medieval towers. This is a house designed for outdoor living, with furnished areas all around its private gardens, all perfect for enjoying the Chianti hills that surround it.
Inside, it has all the creature comforts one might want, with a large and well-equipped kitchen, a welcoming living room and 5 ensuite bedrooms, two of which have bathtubs. Outside it has a large salt-filtered (much more pleasant than chlorine) pool that can be heated on request, as well as a large hot-tub and plenty of places for dining al-fresco, reading and relaxing or just plain snoozing.
When you decide to venture afield and explore, San Martino is ideally placed to reach Tuscany's famous art cities like San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra, Florence, Pisa and Lucca, as well as going off to visit many of the smaller and delightful hill towns, like Certaldo Alto, Casole d'Elsa, Barberino, Panzano or Castellina in Chianti.
The front doors open into a spacious and well-equipped kitchen, as is only right in a gourmet's region such as Tuscany. Beyond the kitchen a dining room with space for 12, and on the right you'll find a large living room with l-shaped divan, and armchairs for reading and relaxing in front of typical Tuscan fireplace, should you spend some time indoors. Large french doors open from the living room onto a furnished loggia and out into the garden.
On the ground floor there is also an en-suite double bedroom, ideal for those who prefer not to have to use the stairs. San Martino is an ideal multi-generational villa so perhaps the grandparents will appreciate the convenience of this room.
Upstairs there are three more ensuite double bedrooms, with one enjoying a large private terrace. There is also a room with bunk beds that also has a double sofa bed, so can be set up as a double if necessary. The whole house is decorated with typical Tuscan materials, terracotta floors, beamed ceilings and wooden shutters.
There is also a cottage with a small kitchen and twin beds and bathroom: this can be requested as extra room, please ask your agent.
Outdoors there are lots of furnished spaces where you can relax, from the hammocks set up among the umbrella pines, to the divans on the edge of the vineyards or the shaded terrace perfect for al-fresco dining. The swimming pool is large, at 17m long (56 feet), salt-filtered and positioned facing the views of San Gimignano.
Villa San Martino is an excellent base for day touring. San Gimignano is a UNESCO site for good reason and draws many to stroll their shops or sit on the cathedral steps under a starry sky for an evening of music.
Also in easy reach are Colle Val d'Elsa, whose crystal manufacturing dates back to the middle ages, Volterra, whose Etruscan ancestors and alabaster production go back even earlier and, of course, Siena and Florence, once former rivals and now many-starred in any guide book and less than an hour away.
The leaning tower of Pisa and the wonderful city of Lucca are also within easy reach.
