This is a charming village house made from the careful conversion and reconstruction of a much larger building in Casole. You can watch the many swallows swirling and diving around the back of the church above the rear of the house. With beamed ceilings, and very nice furniture, the house is well insulated and stays delightfully cool, quiet and undisturbed. The accommodation is all on one floor, up a few steps back and to the side of the stepped village street which runs up to the centre of the village.

Entrance hall/Sitting room with comfortable sofa bed and tiled floor. Double bedroom with parquet floor, twin bedroom with tiled floor, large shower room. The well-fitted kitchen has an antique table and a door to a large garden with furnished patio, lawn, olive tree and flowers, sheltered from outside view. A gate leads from the garden to a sloping path to the higher part of the village.

Around La Rondine

Casole is a charming village with restaurants, grocery shops and friendly cafes. There are a series of festivals throughout the year, of which the most important is Casole's very own version of the Palio, in early July. A horse race up the hill is preceded by flag waving and festivities and culminates in a large village outdoors meal, with the local butcher working the barbecue!

Drive in the direction of SIENA, but prior to reaching Siena exit at COLLE SUD. In less than 100 meters you will come to the 1st roundabout, where you will take the road for GRACCIANO, CASOLE, RADICONDOLI and GROSSETO. You will come to another two roundabouts, but keep following the signs for Casole d’Elsa, Radicondoli and Grosseto. Just 500 m. after the 3rd roundabout you will come to a fork; the road to Gracciano heads to the right, but you take the left turn towards CASOLE, RADICONDOLI and GROSSETO. After another 500 m. follow the road right towards GROSSETO (away from Colle) and drive over the bridge indicated “Ponte Santa Giulia”.° Turn right almost immediately following the sign for Casole d'Elsa. Keep along this lovely ridge road until you come to a T junction, where you turn left and wind uphill towards Casole d'Elsa. Turn right through the pillars. #Drive up towards the village and follow the sign to the right towards the centre. After a few hundred metres you will pass the Carabinieri station on your right, opposite a pharmacy and a cake shop. Drive on just round the corner of the bend and you will see a stepped road, Via Vannini, on the left. La Rondine is situated just to the left of Via Vannini before you get to the hotel, and you reach it by crossing the little paved space, with a chain across it, at the bottom left of the at the side of the stepped street. Cross the chain, walk up the few steps to another little piazza and you will see glass doors on your left with “Swerdlow and Finelli” written on the bell push. The glass doors are open, but the front door to the house is locked. After meeting Matthias to collect the key and unloaded your luggage, you will need to park outside the village or in the village car park just beyond the crucifix you passed earlier. Please do not in any case park in the car park opposite the house because this is a private parking space. COMING FROM PISA AIRPORT: Turn right to exit from the car park at the airport following the BLUE & WHITE sign for Firenze, not the green motorway signs. Keep following signs for Firenze along this dual carriage semi-motorway for about 19 km. until you reach the exit for PONTEDERA. Leave this road here and follow the sign to the left for VOLTERRA and Ponsacco, drive through a district called Le Melorie, then bear right and right again following signs for VOLTERRA (away from Ponsacco). Take care to follow the sign for Capannoli and VOLTERRA coming off a roundabout at one point, about 7 km beyond the exit from the motorway. There is a particularly good example in this area of a bright road - sign engineer evidently convinced that everyone on the road knows the district like the back of their hand. Drive past Capannoli towards VOLTERRA. About 10 km. beyond Capannoli you will reach a small village called La Sterza. Keep going for a further 5 km. and at the junction bear left towards SAN GIMIGNANO, Villa Magna and Volterra. After a further 6.6 km. turn left again, following the sign for SAN GIMIGNANO and after another 300 m. turn right for COLLE VAL d'ELSA and Castel San Gimignano, still following road n. 439. After 10.5 km. you will reach a "T" junction at Roncolla at the bottom east side of Volterra. Turn left here for COLLE VAL d'ELSA and drive along this road for about 12 km. until you see on the right a ruined tower "Torre di Montemiccioli" with a tiny village below it. At this junction, turn to the right following the signs for CASOLE d'ELSA. A dreamer on a donkey evidently laid out this road at the end of a late and entertaining night out, since it consists of a series of completely unnecessary bends. After about 8 or 9 kms you will come to a sharp bend with a yellow house on the right hand side, and after that some ugly new houses up on the left of the road. Keep going, driving past some cypresses and some stone buildings with a big sign on one reading “La Pergola – Villino”. After 500m. you will see a crossroads sign and then after a short straight stretch of road you will reach a road junction. On the right hand side of this junction is a very large old ‘gesso’ (gypsum plaster) factory; which may be undergoing conversion. Take the road leading off to the right here, following the road signs for CASOLE D’ELSA, Radicondoli 23, and Il Merlo, and 2 smaller hotel signposts, for Gemini and Pietrolata. Drive towards Casole d’Elsa. After about 1.5 kms you go through a district called IL MERLO with a good Restaurant/Pizzeria of the same name on your right. About 1.5 kms beyond Merlo you will reach CASOLE D'ELSA. On reaching Casole d'Elsa, drive into the village and follow the directions from # above. COMING FROM FLORENCE AIRPORT, PERETOLA: Turn right on leaving the airport and follow the green motorway signs up the road. Enter the motorway at FIRENZE - NORD following the direction for ROMA. Drive past the exit Firenze-Signa and leave the motorway at the second exit FIRENZE-IMPRUNETA and take the Superstrada/Raccordo FIRENZE - SIENA (motorway link road) immediately to the right of the motorway exit. Drive along this road as far as the first exit for COLLE VAL d'ELSA (36 km.) At this point follow instructions from * above. COMING FROM ROME: Follow signs from Rome along the coast towards GROSSETO and then SIENA. From Siena head north towards FIRENZE, but only 10 km out of Siena take the MONTERRIGIONI exit off and around to the left towards Siena and Monterrigioni.° but only for a couple of hundred metres. Then take the very acute right hand turning just past the bar on the corner of the road, towards COLLE VAL D’ELSA. Take this right turn and drive about 2 km. prior to making a left turn towards ABBADIA ISOLA and STROVE. Drive through these two small villages, following the sign for Grosseto and Colle Val d’Elsa, and 3.5 km. past STROVE you will come to a T-junction with the road SS 541. Turn left here towards GROSSETO, away from Colle and drive over the bridge indicated “Ponte Santa Giulia”. Follow the signs for GROSSETO along the SS 541. You will shortly pass a large (very good) terracotta pots factory and shop on your left and a car salesroom, and some small industrial showrooms, then the land becomes countryside again. Drive on for a further 7 or 8 kms, until you see a petrol station on your left and a highly recommended bar/restaurant “La Speranza” on your right, with a road junction on the right for Casole d’Elsa. Take this right turn and follow the signs to Casole, which will lead you to the road winding up to the village. At this point follow instructions from # above. If you prefer motorway travel, take the Autostrada del Sole (A1) north from Roma as far as the VAL DI CHIANA exit. From this exit follow the road to SIENA, where you will follow first the TANGENZIALE (ring road) and then enter the SIENA-FIRENZE Superstrada. Head north and exit at MONTERRIGIONI and follow instructions from ° immediately above. In this case your cheque will be returned to you after we hear from the owner that any charges you may have incurred during your stay have been settled, and you will avoid any administrative expenses. SHOPPING ON THE WAY: Although some shops are closed on Saturday afternoon, recently this situation has changed. Almost all COOP and other large supermarkets are open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Exit at Poggibonsi Sud where there is a large COOP - open until 8 pm on Saturdays. Just off the exit Poggibonsi Nord (follow directions for San Gimignano - not the centre of oggibonsi) there is another supermarket – PAM - that is also open on Sundays until 8 pm. Casole d'Elsa has two good grocery and fruit and vegetable shops; “Maria’s” which is in the Church square, and "Vittoria & Renato" further along the main road on the right, towards the castle/Town Hal. They are open every day except Wednesday and Sunday afternoons and sell fruit, ham, cheese, bread and delicatessen goods. There is an excellent butcher next to the Bar Barroccio, and there are two good bakers in the village. You need cash at all shops and a 1 €uro coin for a shopping trolley in supermarkets. For really up-to-date tourist information you cannot do better than call in at your local tourist information office, marked with an “i”. Casole’s is at the top of the village lift, next to the town hall. You will be flooded with maps and helpful information, in English as well as other languages, about concerts, events, transport, galleries, museums and exhibitions.
