Uliveto 4

Stylish apartment and private pool close to Siena : Taverne d'Arbia

Nice little touches

  • The spaces are all generous and the setting of the pool in the olive grove is quite magical

Close to Siena yet surrounded by beautiful Tuscan countryside, Uliveto is a villa for four with a private pool set among the olive trees behind the house. The interiors are spacious and stylishly decorated, with high wooden-beamed ceilings, white-washed walls and deep window reveals, and the apartment is air-conditioned, with insect screens and fans for when you want to let the Tuscan air flow through the house.

Siena is just a short drive away, with all the delights of this medieval city on your doorstep, while the wineries of Chianti, Montalcino or Montecatini are all within easy reach.

This is a perfect base from which to indulge in all the pleasures of Tuscany, with history, food, wine and culture all around you.

The external staircase at the centre of the facade leads up to a small landing that accesses a large living room with a rising beamed ceiling.

Long sofas and a central ottoman are in front of the original fireplace box whose internal benches once were places to gather for warmth and shared stories. To the left of the fireplace is an attractive country-style kitchen with a dining table for 6 where natural materials find pleasing harmony with the appliances on which modern cook have come to rely.

To the right of the living room fireplace is a twin bedroom with antique bedsteads, a built-in wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom whose bathtub is equipped with an overhead shower. Opposite this bedroom on the other side of the living room two steps lead up to a short landing off of which are doors to a double bedroom with lovely garden views, a shower room, and a spacious study.

The study’s desk and satellite TV make it a spot to retreat to follow the news or catch up with work, but its large wardrobe and double sofa-bed provides extra accommodation should the number of guests increase.

Around Uliveto

Villa Uliveto is ideally placed for visiting Siena, as well as exploring Chianti, the Val d'Orcia and the classical sights of Central Tuscany.

While back country roads lead to nearby towns that provide all the essential services, they also head to the beautiful Crete Senese, the gentle clay hills south of Siena and some of its most photographed landscape. Not far to the north, instead, are Chianti wineries of note where nurtured vines and oak barrels work their magic; the owners of Uliveto can easily arrange a wine tour that permits one to go tasting both the wine and the Tuscan cuisine that best accompanies it.

Quite likely the call of Siena, the medieval city seen on the horizon, will be irresistable. This medieval city, now famed for its beautiful shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, site of the Palio horse race, rests on three hills enclosed by ancient walls. It is a lively city, full of meandering streets, good shopping and popular restaurants, yet it has maintained an old-world charm that favours an evening stroll over a hurried errand.

Siena sits at the heart of classic Tuscany and in under an hour there are a variety of destinations that promise a good day out.

Pienza, Pope Pius II’s ‘ideal Renaissance city’ is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a window on the beautiful Val d’Orcia; it is also a centre for production of delicious percorino cheese.

Montalcino and Montepulciano, each sitting high above spectacular vistas, are known for prestige wines such as their Brunello and Vino Nobile respectively. And when museums and ancient stones begin to blur, the thermal waters in spas in Rapolano Terme and Bagno Vignoni are an antidote for the travel-weary. Of course the peace and comfort of Cipressi may easily argue for a day at home, and perhaps another.

Worth knowing

Many local administrations now charge a “Tourist Tax” for people staying in rented accommodation and these vary from town to town. The charges are generally per person per night with a maximum number of nights, usually around 5 but sometimes 7, beyond which they will not charge. The charges range between 50 cents to 3 euro. Children are sometimes included, sometimes not and these charges should be collected by the property owners.
