This is a delightful village apartment for four in the village of Chiusdino, west of Siena, very close to the famous roofless abbey of San Galgano, home to wonderful classical concerts during summer. It has been recently restored to make a simple but spacious apartment in the heart of the medieval fortified village, perfect for immersing oneself in the everyday life of a Tuscan village. The village has several restaurants, all within easy walking distance.
Chiusdino and Casa Nonna Rina are in a less explored area of Tuscany, south-west of Siena, in an area of forested hills criss-crossed with tales of pilgrims, saints and bandits, dotted with hill villages, monasteries and old fortresses. The village of Chiusdino still has it's medieval fortifications, with narrow streets lined by tall stone and brick houses, like the one that houses Casa Nonna Rina.
Casa Nonna Rina is listed under the following categories:
The house is entered up a half flight of stairs into a spacious living room, with the kitchen area at the rear, where a window has wonderful views over the rooves of the village across to the hills of Chianti in the distance.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both doubles but one can be made into a twin, and a bathroom with a shower.
One of the village houses in Chiusdino was the birthplace of a local hero, San Galgano, a knight who forsook his fighting life to become a hermit nearby, planting his sword in a rock. There is a museum dedicated to the Saint right next door to the apartment.
Today you can still see his sword in the rock at the site of his conversion, housed in a beautiful vaulted chapel next to an enormous roofless abbey, Abbazia di San Galgano, where classical music concerts are put on over the summer months.
The village has several restaurants, all within easy walking distance of the apartment.
While the house doesn't have a pool, there is wonderful wild-swimming in two nearby rivers, the Farma at the "Canaloni" and in the Merse from Brenna. you can find out more here: "Wild swimming in Tuscany".
The famous centres of Siena, the Val d'Orcia and even Florence can be easily reached from Chiusdino, but it would be a pity not to turn west and explore some of the lesser known villages in the wooded hills between Chiusdino and the sea.
