At the northern end of Lake Como, in a house that could easily have been designed by one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture, Archimede is a tribute to the relationship of man, shelter and nature. Positioned to savour the lake and the wooded mountains surrounding it, clean lines, walls of glass and open lawns offer an extended family or a group of guests the feeling of retreat. If 'less is more', in this case it is also marvelous.
The property, with an emphasis on the horizontal, is nonetheless built over three floors. Leading down from the entrance level is a stylish dining room and a sumptuous living room. Along a corridor off the entrance is a modern kitchen, a guest WC, a single bedroom with pull-out bed and a double bedroom with ensuite. On the upper level is the master bedroom with private terrace and ensuite bathroom with a separate shower, a twin and a double bedroom that share a shower room, and an additional twin bedroom with ensuite WC, which has direct access to a staircase leading to the garden.
The extensive garden has a panoramic pool and Jacuzzi set at the top of the property and access to the shore of the lake via its private woodland.
The surrounding area has such peace and majesty it is no wonder monks of the Piona Abbey, which sits atop a small peninsula nearby, chose this as their place of meditation.
But this end of the lake is not only about spirit; it is also a sportsman's paradise, with easily arranged windsurfing, canoeing, sailing or, for those inspired by the alpine backdrop, climbing or mountain biking.
Excellent boat/ferry service from Colico travel to and from Como daily, stopping at most towns on the way and the train provides shopping in Milan or a visiting La Scala and still being 'home' for cocktails on the terrace.
