1. Villa di Mezzo - near the Tuscan Coast
Private and secluded, this carefully converted farmhouse is a dream. It is loved particularly by city dwellers, who appreciate its spacious country style and private grounds.
You'll spend most of your time outside at Villa di Mezzo in the warm Tuscan sunshine. The garden is gorgeous, full of fragrant flowers and tall, shady trees. There's plenty of space for children to run around, a private pool for cooling off, table football for games and a barbecue for relaxed summer meals. You are not overlooked by other houses here and the grounds are fenced too, so it feels like a safe and private haven. Wifi and air conditioning are also provided, just in case.
Super day trips include discovering the delights of the Tuscan coast, exploring beautiful hill towns and historic cities. Long sandy beaches, Pisa and Lucca are an easy drive away and Florence can be easily reached by car or train.

2. Torretta - northern border of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna
Good quality Italian villas with private pools within walking distance of lovely villages are like gold dust in summer. Torretta is one such villa but it's the thoughtful added extras that make it a firm family favourite.
A welcoming light dinner and basic groceries can be prepared for your arrival, taking the edge off a tiring journey with little ones. Further catering and Italian cookery lessons can be arranged, giving you all a chance to branch out from the usual family meals. A highlight for many is a visit to the villa owner's historic Palazzo and gardens nearby, and you are cordially invited as their guests.
The villa itself is set in a hillside position, giving you stunning panoramic views and privacy. It is heavenly.

3. San Michele - overlooking Arezzo, Tuscany
This is a house with absolutely fabulous views from its hilltop position overlooking the Val di Chiana and the city of Arezzo. The pool and Jacuzzi have been placed on the brow of this hill giving you an amazing viewpoint over the Tuscan apennines, it really is spectacular.
The owners also have a wonderful collection of animals a short distance away, a delight for children who can visit the goats, donkeys, goats, chickens and many more. There is also a vegetable garden to give you the freshest produce possible - picked in the morning and in your salad by lunchtime. For the adults' delight, the owners, who live next door, are keen wine-makers and buyers, with a fabulous cellar you'll be invited to visit - there really is something for all the family here.
When you decide to explore, there is plenty to see in the area, from the frescoes of Piero della Francesca in Arezzo, to nearby Chianti, Cortona or Lake Trasimeno.

4. Docciole - Radda in Chianti, Tuscany
This large Tuscan farmhouse is a wonderful place for family holidays: large and rambling with enough space for everybody to get together, and then a little more for time alone. The top floor is designed for communal living, while three apartments on the ground floor provide a little privacy when needed. Everyone can congregate upstairs in the enormous living room or outdoors under the pergola and dining table by the pool, but if you'd like a little quiet time just retreat to your own apartment and re-join the fray when you've charged your batteries.
Radda in Chianti is only a short walk away, around 1km or 15 min, with restaurants, cafes and excellent wineries.

5. Ragnana - west of Siena, Tuscany.
Holiday villas have become more and more like luxury hotels, ever sleeker and ever more luxurious. Ragnana is none of these things and for this very reason it continues to be a firm favourite with our families. It's a big old farmhouse converted just enough for summer living, with a great big pool, a barbecue flanked by an outdoor table and, the cherry on top, it is right next to a fabulous Tuscan hill village.
This is a house for relaxing days by the pool, strolls into the village for ice creams, for evening apertifs and meals on the big outside table. It is for old fashioned holidays where much is planned and little is done.
If you do decide to explore, Siena is barely 30 minutes away, the local villages are all great. Furthermore, there are wonderful walks and cycle routes around the house. Lastly, as simple as the house is, it does have wifi throughout.
Rental prices start at €1,500.00 Ragnana - Sleeps 8
