Standing on a hilltop 600m above sea level, in a fabulous, isolated position in the wild and wooded High Maremma countryside, west of Siena, Le Tanelle is a large, square, farmhouse, sensitively converted by its American architect owner. It has extraordinary views right across the countryside as far as San Gimignano.
After driving along an unmade road through wonderful countryside, you finally come out on the top of the world. Sparkling waters slide over the edge of the pool and you feel that you could float off into the pine tops and on to the distant patchwork valleys and hill towns. All to a backdrop of birdsong and gently running water.
The imposing stone house has entrances on all four sides. Big wrought iron gates mark the entrance to an open courtyard. There is a double bedroom on this floor. The farmhouse kitchen, with stone flagged and terracotta floors, has a worn kitchen table and good equipment including a dishwasher. The dining-sitting room has comfortable armchairs round an open, corner fireplace. Tall, glazed, arched doors in front of the big dining table open to a flower decked, furnished terrace with steps leading down to the pool. Beyond the sitting rooms a wide corridor leads to a shower room, a laundry room and to the main entrance. A wide, dressed stone staircase leads to a huge upstairs living room, spanned by two arches, with the original Tuscan fireplace, and comfortable furniture. There are two double bedrooms, a shower room and a large bathroom with free-standing bath and separate shower stall. The fourth bedroom has a double and a single bed, and a room opening directly from it with a single bed.
The house is about 20 minutes drive from the hill town of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina and a similar distance from Radicondoli. Less than an hour's drive through beautiful countryside takes you to the sandy coast.
The restoration of Le Tanelle has deliberately retained many original features, such as the stone flags on the ground floor, massive roof beams, and the enormous traditional Tuscan fireplace upstairs. The addition of excellent quality fixtures and furnishings, and opening up the already large rooms, takes advantage of its extraordinary situation to show the house at its best.
Outside the views are even more stunning than from indoors. There is a particular magic emanating from such details as the old doors used for outside tables, shaded by vines, decorated with flowers, and furnished with modern, comfortable outside furniture
This is a very special peaceful and tranquil area of unspoilt countryside. There are other houses within half a mile or so, and you do not feel totally isolated, but at the same time one has complete privacy and peace. The surrounding land of mixed woodlands and natural meadows is rich in wildflowers, animals and ancient ruins including a castle. It is very rewarding to explore on foot, on horseback or with mountain bikes. Important! This property is let from Friday to Friday.
