Traveling throughout Tuscany, one often wonders where an unpaved road might take them. One such road, below the Montagnola village of Orgia outside Siena, is well worth following, for shaded by a long arcade of generous trees, it passes fertile plains, only to climb gently into the woods and arrive at a house in a glade that has been standing for centuries. The house, with its stone barn and nearby oven house, is surrounded in a loose embrace of holm oak, pines, cork trees and corbezzolo, yet is positioned to enjoy views of the valley below and the many horizons that lead to Mt. Amiata. An excellent place for family reunions and visitors of all ages, Cerreto abounds in places of quiet retreat and joyous get-togethers. If your group becomes larger at the last minute, it is possible to take the property for 10. See your agent about prices and details.
The approach drive ends at the top of the property, with easy access to the upper storey of the main house. Entrance to the house is through a wide covered portico into a pleasant study, off of which are wide hallways leading to the bedrooms. At each end of the hallway are ensuite bedrooms - to the right a large double bedroom with a bathroom, to the left a twin bedroom with ensuite shower room and access to an upper furnished terrace. Also on this floor are two other twin bedrooms, which share a shower room across the hall. A staircase leads down to a hallway off of which is a bright dining room with seating for 12 and French doors to a terrace and an additional covered dining area for al fresco meals. Also on the ground floor is a large whimsically painted eat-in kitchen whose large larder has a washing machine. A door from the kitchen leads to a side terrace near the barbecue and strategically placed herbs for the chef. At the other end of the hallway, a large sitting room, with French doors out to the side garden, has sofas in front of a fireplace, as well as areas set aside for those who would watch the news or set up a game of cards.
Should your group wish to spread out a bit or if you find at the last minute that an extra guest would like to join you, there or extra cottages at Cerreto that can be readied with advance notice and a supplemental cost. Check with your agent for rates.
In the well-tended grounds of Cerreto there is shade offered by trees that have known the passage of centuries and open sunny lawns where one can work on a souvenir tan. The pool is set in the slope of the land and has wooden decking furnished with sunbeds and umbrellas. Nearby, a grove of born-again olive trees illustrates the power of husbandry and scents of lavender, rosemary and broom fill the air. Your hosts, who have been involved in the agriculture of this region for generations, are charming and near enough to be an excellent resource. Whether visiting the small villages nestled in the Montagnola hills, heading to Siena, the medieval gem less than half an hour away, or discovering why the Tuscan coastline deserves its glowing and growing reputation, guests at Cerreto will have a wonderful base for a memorable holiday.
Our Customers say:
"The trip was amazing - from the start Dan was extremely helpful, knew the area and the house really well and after recommending a good cycle bore shop even provided cycle routes for us - could not fault him. The accommodation was perfect, exactly what we wanted - very quiet away from anyone else and the votes spectacular. The property owners were extremely welcoming including fresh flowers in many rooms, home baked bread and other delights. Well beyond what we expected. All in all it ticked every box, a great break. Many thanks to Dan for steering us in the right direction and all his help and advice!!"
