This comfortable house in the picturesque commune of Bagni di Lucca offers outdoor living and easy access to all the delights of Northern Tuscany. The Mulino is located on a quiet country lane less than 15 minutes walk from the village of Fornoli, crossing the famous 19th century suspension bridge built by Notolini. Fornoli contains all the traditional village shops, several bars and restaurants, also a bank, a supermarket and a hairdresser. An excellent food market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. There is no problem parking in Fornoli.

The eighteenth century Mulino has been recently rebuilt in stone and chestnut, the cool paved interior being a haven from the heat of summer. A large modern kitchen, separate dining hall and a TV study are all on the raised ground floor, and three roomy twin bedrooms, all with ensuite bath or shower room, are on the first floor. There is a separate ground floor cloakroom with occasional shower. Outside the house; the stream runs by and provides continuous background music to life round the 10 x 4 m pool, which sits in a woodland setting. A fine terrace overlooks the waterside garden and offers seating for ten around the sturdy garden table shaded by white parasols.

Around Molino alla Torrente

Access is easy; there are no winding hairpin roads to negotiate. The many smaller villages that comprise the Commune of Bagni di Lucca are delightfully varied and steeped in history. Some, built in medieval times, continue as lively mountaintop communities that enjoy heart-stopping views of snowy Appenine peaks and deep valleys; others nestle in folds of tree-clad hills and boast excellent eating-out and beautiful churches; and of course Bagni di Lucca is famous for its warm-water springs and spas. Flowing through Bagni is the river Lima, a sparkling river that alternates between foaming rapids for the Kayak enthusiast and deep still lakelets for the wild swimmer, where Kingfishers dash by. Southwards lies Lucca, unique walled city just half an hour away, with shops, bars restaurants, music festivals and a monthly antique market - a taste of classical Renaissance Italy wherever you walk. Going the other way northwards along the valley of the Serchio one finds the beautiful Garfagnana, a region offering spectacular scenery, the picturesque towns Barga and Castelnuovo, and for walkers endless trails along tracks and stonepaved roads dating back thousands of years. Local walking maps are readily found in local libreria. The coast is an hour's drive at Viareggio - long sandy beaches - and a little further to the Ligurian Riviera and the Cinque Terre.
