In the gentle rise and fall of the Chianti hills, Casal Solare sits at the centre of radiating rows of grape vines and olive trees, a beautiful tribute to how a large farmhouse well into its second century can be transformed into a luxurious villa where comfort and pleasure are the order of the day. The main stone villa with its wide furnished terrace and the adjacent cottage overlook extensive grounds that produce its own red wine and golden olive oil, and easily guarantee a restful night's sleep in beautiful surroundings. Yet Casal Solare has taken well-being to another level, for there is a romantic oval pool and jacuzzi set in the midst of the vineyards, a restaurant ready on request to exclusively serve villa guests, and even an indoor spa to help melt away any stress which came along on holiday.
Accommodation
The renovation that brought modern comforts to the villa was careful to maintain the original beamed ceilings, brick arches and terracotta floors, all of which add warmth to its large spaces. These features are immediately evident in the large entry hall with comfortable sofa and armchairs and open fireplace. To one side of the entry hall is a suite of rooms consisting of a large living room with an open fireplace and access to the outdoors, an eat-in kitchen, a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and an additional shower room. To the other side of the hall a short corridor leads to the main kitchen, equipped with a counter seating for the cook's helpers and, nearby, a sofa in front of a large fireplace for those who are content to let the good smells drift over. The large dining room, with glass doors to a back terrace, has two tables with seating for 18.
A modern staircase from the back of the dining room leads up to the sleeping quarters. A corridor from the landing leads to one twin and three double bedrooms, all but one of which having a shower or bathroom ensuite. Of these bedrooms, one has a furnished roof terrace with views of the countryside and another has a mezzanine floor with a double sofa bed. The remaining bedrooms are off the large sitting room on the same floor that has comfortable furniture in front of an open fireplace, a dining area with a table for six and a handy kitchen for making a cup of tea or late-night snack. In addition to the three double bedrooms in this area, all with ensuite shower rooms, there is also a staircase to the large double bedroom in the former dovecote. Guests in this room will have to go down and up a few stairs to get to their own private shower room, but it may be that the 360-degree panorama of the Chianti countryside seen from the bedroom windows makes it worth it. Each of the bedrooms is named for roles workers played on a Tuscan farm estate and all are furnished with country antiques and bright fabrics. Also on this floor is a games room with tables, chairs and decks of cards and board games to help while away the evening hours.
Around Casal Solare
While the ground floor of the cottage near the main villa is the residence of the property caretakers, further guest accommodation for four is available in the spacious upper level (See Ref 17). Below the villa living quarters and accessed both from the entrance hall and a door from the front lawn the small fitness and spa centre used exclusively by villa guests is equipped with exercise bikes, a sauna, a Jacuzzi pool, and an automatic shiatsu massage bed. A path from the villa takes you down past the Meeting Hall to the outdoor dining patio and an estate restaurant perfect for catering or cooking classes. These structures are particularly useful if Casal Solare is used for large family reunions, conferences or weddings, and the English-speaking property manager, who is on hand in the estate office in a separate part of the villa, will be happy to help you plan anything to help make your holiday or event a success. Whether it's advising you on wine tours or booking you restaurant or museum tickets, or even giving you tips on the best places to shop, you can count on a hand to help you discover the corners of Tuscany it will be a delight to remember.
