Nestled in the foothills of the Montagnola just south of Siena, Borgo Personatina, a classic Tuscan farm estate long tending the wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards that surround it, has recently, in the hands of two artistic women, been given renewed life. With great respect for tradition and a designer's eye to detail, they have taken the elements of the estate: the villa, its chapel, farmhouses and agricultural buildings; added their love of culture and cuisine and created an ideal retreat a la Italiana.
The whole estate, built of the white, grey and golden stones pulled from nearby fields or the surrounding hills, sits overlooking a wide clearing in the oak woods and silver olive trees, vines hung with grapes, stalwart cypresses, and the backdrop of holm oak all contribute to a palette of greens outside each window. The imposing villa and some of the farmhouses have been carefully converted into comfortable accommodations, each with a private outdoor dining space. Unless guests of the villa have arranged for its private use, all guests share the large pool in the extensive back garden and may wander throughout the estate at will. The charming resident owners of the estate are very sensitive to guests' needs and a special reason for choosing Borgo Personatina are the many activities they can help arrange: art or nature tours, horse riding for children to name but two. In the gleaming kitchen in the villa cantina Orsa, the "kitchen anthropologist" caters meals for guests of the Borgo or introduces students, young and old, to the rich culinary traditions of the area. She will also take them to the source in excursions to a local winery, oil mill, or producers of delicious sheep or goat cheese. For lovers of art and nature, Borgo Personatina is perfectly situated. Castles, cloisters, small churches, and grand villas are everywhere around Sovicille and the tangled forests of the Montagnola hills or the emerald waters of the river Merse harbour spots to delight the most experienced of travelers. And for those drawn to the company of others, there are the medieval cities of Siena and San Gimignano, where ancient architecture and contemporary bustle have found a workable harmony.
