Accommodation
Casa Mario is the most elegant of the delightful houses in the tiny hamlet of Stigliano. On the ground floor, a few steps up from the unpaved hamlet "street", there are two large reception rooms. One is a sitting/living room with a large fireplace and the kitchen equipment at the far end behind a low wall. The enormous old fireplace along one side of the room is left as is has been for many a year, with seats in and around it and is particularly good for cooking on. There is a large dining table in this end of the room. The kitchen end has a marble sink and top quality equipment. A second, large room on this floor is furnished as a sitting room, but it also adapts well as twin bedroom, with two divans and a wardrobe as well as comfortable sitting-room furniture. A door leads to a private, furnished garden at the rear, which in turn connects with the large communal garden that runs along the walls of the hamlet. A heavy cast iron spiral staircase leads up to the first floor landing with access to three double bedrooms, a shower room and a large bathroom with a large brick arch. A sliding door separates the shower end of the bathroom from two wash basins and a Jacuzzi bathtub. The furniture is mainly antique and fittings modern and high quality.
Around Casa Mario
It is fascinating to follow the current changes taking place in this ancient hamlet at Poggiarello, adapting itself to contemporary use with grace, whispering intimate details of its past to those lucky enough to stay in it to-day, providing comforts and modern plumbing, but always keeping to the forefront the dignity and mystery of its past, thereby providing the modern amenities we desire yet still preserving its precious heritage. The approach lane to Poggiarello is very rough, and it is wise to leave your car 100 metres away in the village below. Walking in this area is superb, along sandy tracks between ancient cypresses, one of which leads to excellent river swimming in the Merse at Brenna and another to Montestigliano (see Ref. Nos. 55-65), where concerts and exhibitions are held and meals, cooking schools for children and adults, and riding can be arranged if booked in advance. For touring and exploring, the rich heritage of Tuscany is on your doorstep, with good trunk roads within a short drive from Stigliano.
