The colours of the Chianti, its hills covered by a neverending range of greens, yellow and orange and its enchanting medieval hilltop towns, castles and stone farmhouses, become magic when the sun begins to set.
In order to catch the setting sunlight the tour will start in the afternoon and make its first stop at the Castle of Volpaia, a small and charming jewel built on a hilltop in the 12th century. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into modern wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses all connected by an amazing underground “wineduct”. These make Volpaia not only a magnificent tourist attraction, but also a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are, directly or indirectly, involved with the wine making. The tour will take the participants through the olive mill and the cellars and will include wine and olive oil tasting.
The journey will continue through the beautiful “strada del vino” to the Castle of Brolio owned by the Ricasoli family since 1141. The Ricasolis have always been linked to the production of high quality wines; Baron Bettino Ricasoli was in fact the creator of the first ever known Chianti recipe in 1872. Brolio, on the border between the territories of Siena and Florence, soon became the stage of all the disputes of the period, representing the Florentine bulwark against fearsome Siena. This is therefore an artistic and historic visit as well as a unique gastronomic experience. After a guided tour of the medieval castle, the gardens and of the Ricasoli collection, participants will enjoy a relaxed aperitif and a typical Tuscan dinner in the Osteria del Castello, while tasting a glass of Barone Ricasoli’s Wine.
