About car hire and driving in Tuscany
Our properties are mostly in positions that make a car essential. After many years’ experience of the ability of various car models to cope with the sometimes rough tracks, we have come to the conclusion that the type of car that travels fastest and best on these roads is – a hired car! You should not drive on a provisional License. A full license is required and the minimum driving age is 18 years. You must have your license with you at all times while driving. Americans must have an International Driving License. Seat belts must be worn, and except for infants in front infant seats, children under ten must not travel in front seats. A red warning triangle should be carried in case of breakdown (this will be part of your rental car equipment). Carry personal identification such as your passport with you. You must also carry with you proof of insurance for the car. When driving your own car it is advisable to have a ‘green card’ from your insurance company, to avoid the likelihood of your insurance cover being reduced to ‘third party’ basic cover.
A recent law makes it obligatory to keep your lights on at all times except when driving in city centres. This contrasts neatly with another, as yet unrepealled law, which forbids driving in daylight with your lights on. The fines are very useful in times of economic stress.
